On Wednesday 8th July, @mothership.marrickville, Miya Miya Film Club and Liberation Cinema present: Hit the Road (Iran, 2021) directed by Panah Panahi.
@liberationcinema_ is a Sydney-based collective dedicated to screening films that engage with anti-colonial, anti-imperialist, and liberation struggles. Their programming foregrounds cinema as a site of resistance, bringing together works that challenge dominant narratives and open space for collective engagement.
Panah Panahi’s debut follows a family travelling across Iran toward an uncertain destination. Set largely inside a car, the film unfolds through fragments of conversation, silence, and passing landscape. What begins with humour and play gradually gives way to something more fragile, shaped by departure, separation, and what cannot be openly spoken.
Working within a tradition of Iranian cinema attentive to the everyday, Hit the Road builds its emotional weight through small gestures. Panahi constructs a world that feels intimate yet precarious. Moments of tenderness sit alongside an underlying sense of urgency, where care and protection are constantly negotiated. What emerges is a portrait of family under pressure, held together through humour, affection, and restraint.
The road becomes a space of transition. Movement across geography mirrors something more internal, where leaving is both necessary and unresolved. The film resists explanation, allowing its tensions to sit quietly, accumulating over time.
